Our names are Eleanor and Tya and we are in our earlytwenties and late teens, and reside in New York City
and Columbus, Ohio, respectively. We am assembling a
fanzine about Joy Division, New Order and directly
related artists from the late seventies to mid
eighties. The idea for this project came about
because of a growing obsession of ours with these
bands. We want to explore the the political and
artistic influence they have had on our art and our
lives and celebrate what they have created. We are
also interested in comparing media, critical and
personal responses to their music in the 1980's versus
the present. We are looking to create a forum to
build connections between fans and to discuss our
theories and ideas about these bands with other fans.
Currently we are looking for interviews with Joy
Division and New Order from old fanzines and music
magazines that would be legal to reprint (full credit
would be given of course), profiles of of individual
band members, essays about these bands and their
songs, current interviews with artists who cite these
bands as an influence and inspiration, a short
paragraph about how these bands have affected you,
stories about seeing or interacting with these bands,
as well as profiles of people who make and maintain
fan web sites and document the history of these bands.
We are also interested in information about other
artists who have worked with Joy Division and New
Order, such as Martin Hannett who produced Joy
Divisions albums and had his own project, the
Invisible Girls, and Peter Saville, who has designed
every album cover for both Joy Division and New Order
and is an incredibly influential graphic designer. Any
other thoughtful piece of writing or information which
would be interesting and relevant to a New Order and
Joy Division fanzine is welcome as well.
The fanzine will also include a limited edition
videocassette. Contributions for this component of
the project could be a film made to or about a New
Order or Joy Division song, a short film or part of a
film inspired by New Order or Joy Division,
documentary pieces that relate to the time period or
any other piece of art which might be best expressed
on videocassette format. Film pieces must be
submitted in VHS format and be the best quality
possible.
The title of the fanzine will be "Twenty Years Too
Late", acknowledging the fact that we have come to
fandom late and the point where we are beginning to
fully appreciate these bands is twenty years after Joy
Division ended and New Order began. With the release
of New Order's new album, Get Ready, the opportunity
to create current discourse and community around these
bands is great. Also, this zine acknowledges
nostalgia while looking ahead. We ourselves have no
memory of the 1980's that relates to New Order and Joy
Division. To us the 1980's was My Little Pony and
Madonna and we can only speculate about the influence
these bands had then. However, the chance to be moved
by the music and presence of these bands is incredibly
real. This fanzine hopes to provide a place for
artistically minded people to share ideas within a
certain framework in order to motivate each other to
keep creating the art we do and loving the music we
enjoy. As the current political and social climate
becomes bleaker we believe we need forums like this to
keep us going and remind us why art in the face of
oblivion is essential.
Twenty Years Too Late will have an approximate print
run of 500 which will be sold by zine distributors in
the US and Internationally and sold at zine, music and
comic stores in the US. It will be hand bound with a
letterpress printed cover. It will be printed on a
photocopier or by offset print, depending on costs.
The video will have a limited run of 200. This
project will be exclusively not for profit and will be
advertising free, though contributors are welcome to
include their contact information and their current
artistic projects. A copy of the zine and the video
will be given to each contributor. Deadline for
contributors for both the fanzine and the video is May
1, 2002. The zine is due out in July of 2002.
